Spreading the Risk
A survey by Barclays has revealed that 64% of business leaders and 27% of consumers are postponing key purchase and investment decisions until after the forthcoming budget on 28th October 2026. At the same time research from Ernst & Young revealed that profit warnings from UK businesses have reached a two year high.
Does this mean that we should look to invest outside the UK? Well, that Barclays survey also revealed that 81% of UK businesses are looking to increase investment if the budget delivers greater long term economic certainty. And whilst those profit warnings cite areas of concern such as rising costs and weak consumer confidence, they also highlight wider concerns including geopolitical instability driven by the war in the Middle East. And you only have to look at the way in which the UK stockmarket was affected by riots in France to see how interconnected global finances are.
Despite this interdependence the best investment advice remains to look towards choosing a portfolio of investments which reach across business sectors and continents. That can help to spread the risk of portfolios being affected by both internal and external factors.
