Reporting Fraud
The best time to stop fraud is before it happens. That’s why reporting suspicious e-mails, texts and phone calls is so important; giving the police a chance to stop fraudulent attempts before another victim is caught in the fraudster’s web. Since its inception in 2020, the Suspicious Email Reporting service run by the National Cyber Security Centre has received more than 55 million reports from members of the public. As a result, over a quarter of a million scam operations running across 443,000 websites have been taken down.
In order to report a suspicious contact simply:
- Forward e-mails to report@phishing.gov.uk
- Forward texts to 7726
- Report calls by sending a text to 7726 with the word ‘Call’ followed by the caller’s number.
In every instance in order to protect yourself don’t open suspicious texts or e-mails and do hang up on suspicious phone calls. And remember no legitimate organisation would ask for a verification code. As Devon & Cornwall Police recently commented “your verification code is your final security barrier.” If you hand that over you are giving fraudsters control over your accounts. So, if you are asked for that code, always say no and hang up immediately.
