Brand New Science
The University of Exeter has won a £19.6m contract to develop new materials which could transform the way we live. These new ‘metamaterials’ have properties which are not found in nature but could be engineered to be used in a range of applications including health, energy and communications. Speaking about the investment, Science Minister Lord Vallance said: “This work is paving the way for future products and innovations that will deliver jobs and growth, in the years ahead.”
It’s a good example of the way in which the world doesn’t stand still, with new applications having the potential to continually transform the way in which we live. Not every research project will result in a transformative breakthrough. So, rushing to invest in potential new technologies is a high-risk strategy for investors. Nevertheless, it is also risky to cling onto investments that are rooted in old technologies and processes and which may have been superseded by new innovations. That’s why investment best advice is for investments to be reviewed regularly to take account of changing marketplace and personal circumstances.
