When Three Words Save Lives

In our articles we endeavour to cover a range of topics which might be of interest to visitors to our website. Naturally our main focus is on areas such as pensions and investments but from time to time we also cover more general topics such as how to keep your bank account or personal information safe from potential scammers, or items of interest in the local area.

In this article we are looking at a mobile app which, according to the South Western Ambulance Service (SWASFT), could save lives this summer. Used by more and more agencies the ‘what3words’ app enables emergency services to locate callers to within a 3 metre square area. In essence the app has divided the globe into a 3x3m grid and given each grid a unique three word address. Give that unique address to the emergency services and they know exactly where to find you.

SWASFT is encouraging people to download the free app onto their phones so that it is available if needed. However, they do ask that people only use the app in a genuine emergency. Commenting on the app David Fletcher from SWASFT said:

“This new mapping system will allow people to tell us easily and simply exactly where they are. So no matter whether they are in the middle of Dartmoor, at a festival, or in the middle of a university campus, their location will have a unique three-word description which will help us to find them. If you download the app, it will mean we can find you more easily in an emergency when every second counts. It really could be the difference between life and death.” Read more.
