Time to Care
A study released by Age UK has revealed that a combination of factors including a squeeze in local authority budgets and a shortage of social care nurses has resulted in a lack of care availability for 1 in 7 older people. Whilst the study also revealed that there has been a slight rise in the number of beds available nationally in the last five years, this has been offset by a rise in demand from an increasingly elderly population.
Despite the South West being seen as a retirement destination, one interesting statistic showed that the percentage of those aged over 65 who needed help with one or more tasks on a daily basis is the second lowest in the country. Nevertheless, the study also revealed that the rural nature of our region can lead to gaps in formal care provision, partially offset by higher than average levels of informal care. And when it comes to care home places, the South West also has a higher percentage of self-funders at 49% than the national average.
