Exeter's Rich History

Another chapter has been added to Exeter’s rich history with the uncovering of a previously unknown Roman fort. The significant role which the Romans played in the making of Exeter is already well known and celebrated through events such as a Roman walk organised by The Devon Archaeological Society earlier this month.

Now however, archaeologists working on the bus station development have made a ‘very important and completely unexpected’ discovery as the remains of a Roman fort have come to light. Finds include coins and pottery demonstrating, according to archaeologists working on the project, “just how pivotal a role the Exeter area played in the first decades of the Roman conquest and subjugation of Britain.”

It’s another demonstration of the way in which our decisions today can enrich the lives of those in the future. We may not be able to leave the sort of legacy that the Romans have left us but the decisions we make today in areas such as investment or inheritance tax planning could make a difference in the future.
