Wellbeing in Later Life
'Age need not be a barrier to well-being.’ That's one of the findings of a well-being in later life
index which has been developed by Age UK and the University of Southampton. In creating the
index the researchers analysed data from 15,000 people aged sixty and over.
Looking at five key areas namely social, personal, health, financial and environmental the
researchers concluded that there is no magic bullet which will guarantee well-being in later life.
However, factors such as socialising, being physically active and being willing to try out new things all
seem to contribute to well-being.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, finances also play their part with those in the top 20% of the well-being
index more likely to own their own home and not have any serious money worries. However, with
the average score coming out at just over 50 there is room for improvement. Commenting on this
Age UK’s charity director, Caroline Abrahams said “Health and finance were the two domains most
responsible for holding back this overall score and are both areas where we need to go further and
do more.”
