Taking the Long View

It’s the awards season and with the Baftas and the Grammys being held on the same night there
were plenty of trophies on offer. As with all of these occasions some nominees had to be content
with simply being there whilst others garnered multiple accolades.

Amongst all of the hype and the ceremony it is perhaps important to remember the transience of
award ceremonies. Yes the immediacy of the moment may propel one contender above all others
but it is the test of time which will bring out true worth.

Take Singing in the Rain for example. Nominated for only two Oscars and winning none, the film is
now widely seen as the best musical film ever made and has recently been recognised by the
American Film Institute as the fifth greatest film of all time. Ironically the year Singing in the Rain
was passed over for awards, the Oscar was won by The Greatest Show on Earth, now listed as one of
the worst films to have won an Oscar!

It’s a great reminder of the importance of taking a long term view rather than simply reacting to the
moment.
