Regulating Care Homes

There comes a time in life when a loved one’s support needs may change and they can no longer be safely cared for within the home. When that time comes it can stir up a range of mixed emotions from relief that their ongoing needs will be met, to worry about whether the chosen care home is right for them.

Luckily there is a range of support and advice available for those looking towards a stay in a care home, starting with regular inspections carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Just as they constantly seek to improve the quality of care received by people across the health and care sector, the CQC also constantly look to improve their inspection regime, learning from the outcomes of their inspection and industry best practice.

With this in mind they have recently launched a consultation on a set of proposals which will help to shape their next phase of regulation for health and social care in England. The proposals look at a range of factors including the regulation of adult social care services such as care homes and home-care services, the frequency and intensity of inspections, and the proposed inspection regime for large or complex providers of care. This includes care homes provided by NHS trusts or run by care home groups. The consultation closes on Tuesday, 8 August 2017.
