Food Savings
According to the “love food hate waste” website the average UK family throws away £700 of food every year. To put this into perspective, ONS figures in 2016 quoted the average family food bill as £81.40 per week which means we are effectively throwing away two months’ worth of food every year - and that’s just the waste in the home; globally one third of the food produced doesn’t make it to the plate.
Little wonder then that there have been various initiatives in recent times to try and reduce the amount of food waste. The latest from Devon County Council sees it linking up with local authorities from six other European countries in a four year project to identify best practices and come up with innovative ways to reduce food waste, not only in the home but also across the whole supply chain.
Commenting on the project DCC Waste Manager Annette Dentith said “this is an exciting opportunity for Devon to make some real headway in addressing the issue of reducing food waste amongst businesses and households.”
When we think of saving it is more traditionally in terms of finance; looking after the pennies so the pounds can take care of themselves. Perhaps saving food waste could also help our finances over the long term.
