Brexit Begins

Wednesday, 29 March 2017 will go down in history as the day on which the Prime Minister, Theresa May, formally initiated the Brexit process. Her letter to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and his reply will set in motion a two-year negotiation process which will govern the future relationship between the UK and EU.

As the negotiators get down to business we can expect to see commentaries from various industry bodies which will naturally be concerned about gaining the best possible outcome for their sectors. We may also see announcements from governments or organisations which are looking to invest in the UK or divest some of their holdings in the UK depending on their view of the strength of the UK economy. With the progress of negotiations being watched keenly not just in the UK and the EU but also across the world, we may also see fluctuations in both investment values and the pound as markets react to rumour or agreement.

In a time of fluctuation it is worth remembering that investments should generally be made with a long-term viewpoint, based on individual needs and circumstances.
