When Should I Invest?
The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has sent out the first Brexit timetable signals. These indicate that it is her intention to trigger article 50 which starts the formal two-year leaving process by the end of March 2017 with a ‘great repeal’ bill being introduced in the Queen’s speech in May of that year. This will pave the way for a transposition of EU law into UK law as well as ending the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice once the UK leaves the EU.
With the next few years likely to be filled with negotiations and discussions, compromises and agreements, it would be easy to hold back on investing, to adopt a wait-and-see approach. However when we are talking about long-term investments the best advice is that although the value of investments can fall as well as rise, waiting to invest is not generally recommended.
For example, at the time of writing we are halfway through the tax year. Whilst there is generally a flurry of last-minute investments into ISAs at the end of each tax year, those who invested towards the beginning of the tax year could have had the benefit of an additional year’s worth of tax-free investments by the time the tax year ends.
