The EU Referendum
The negotiating is over and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, has set the date for a referendum on EU membership as Thursday 23 June. Between now and then we should expect to see a raft of debates, discussions and thought pieces as the in and out camps seek to persuade voters to their point of view whilst neutral observers try to present a balanced viewpoint.
If the Scottish referendum is anything to go by, opinion polls and surveys will also be rife. Here again some will be skewed to one or other viewpoint whilst others will look to judge the mood of the nation. Along the way, we may see some volatility both in the stock market and with the pound as traders react to the reported mood of the nation.
What does this all mean for investors? Well the referendum won’t be the only factor affecting the stock market; oil prices, domestic and foreign unemployment trends, trade and growth figures are just some of the factors which can influence markets on a daily basis. That’s why the best practice advice for investors has always been to look upon investments as a long-term proposition based on individual needs and expectations.
