The Baby Boomber Generation
The Chief Medical Officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, has released her latest report on the state of the nation’s health and it makes very interesting reading. This time she has concentrated on baby boomers, those now aged between fifty and seventy who were born in the period after the second world war.
With those born in the later stages of the baby boomer generation facing delayed retirement it is estimated that by 2020 some 30% of the British workforce will be aged over 50. However, the report reveals that 42% of workers aged over fifty have to contend with at least one ongoing health condition with musculoskeletal problems leading the way (21%) followed by circulatory problems (17%).
This review of the baby boomer generation highlights the importance of work as an important contributor to overall mental and physical well-being in later life. In line with this it discusses ways in which employers can help older individuals to stay within the workforce including the provision of flexitime or part-time working. However it also acknowledges that poor health has contributed to the forced early retirement of 46% of those aged between fifty-five and statutory retirement age.
