Taxing Time for Cash ISAs
“Are cash ISAs dead?” That was the headline in one national newspaper at the end of February as the British Bankers Association reported a net outflow of funds from cash ISAs in the previous six months. The statistic is perhaps not surprising given the low rate of interest being offered by some institutions for cash ISAs but whether or not it represents the ‘death’ of the cash ISA is yet to be seen.
Certainly, some commentators are questioning whether cash ISAs will be as attractive in the forthcoming tax year as they have been in the past; particularly given the personal savings allowance which comes into play in the new tax year. For the moment, investing in a tax efficient vehicle such as an ISA or pension remains a viable option for many investors. Best practice advice continues to be to maximise tax efficient allowances wherever practicable and to personalise investment portfolios in accordance with current and future anticipated needs.
