Reviewing Care Homes

“Choosing a care home can be emotional and costly. It’s therefore essential that elderly people and their families have all the information they need to make the best possible choice, and then feel secure in the knowledge they will be fairly treated throughout their time there.”

Those words came from the acting Chief Executive of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Dr Andrea Coscelli, as he launched a review of nursing and care homes. The CMA review is wide-ranging, looking at areas such as how well care homes meet their obligations under consumer law and the experience which people have in choosing a care home.

The study also intends to explore the protection given to residents under the current regulation and complaints system. In connection with this the CMA has called for feedback from care home residents and their families; in particular looking for comments on hidden charges, ‘top up’ fees and the way in which complaints were handled. The CMA would also welcome comments from care home providers about the challenges which they face in delivering good levels of care to people with a wide range of needs.

Care and nursing homes currently look after 430,000 people across the UK.
