Planning for Later Life.
This week Radio 5 are running a series of articles examining the UK’s attitudes towards ageing. From ageism in the workforce to the experiences of older parents and older drivers, the programmes aim to deliver a “week-long national discussion looking at one of the key social issues of our time”
As part of their campaign Radio 5 carried out a survey which revealed that 22% of adults feared aging. It’s hardly a surprising statistic, but there are things that we can do now to help us to prepare for later life. For example, earlier this year Public Health England launched a campaign called “One You” which aims to highlight the ways in which changes in our diet and fitness levels in middle age can make a measurable difference to our health in later life.
Planning our financial futures - pensions or investments can also help us prepare for a more secure later life. However, an ONS study of financial capability within the UK released last year revealed that when it comes to planning ahead we still have some way to go. Whilst the study revealed a score of 7/10 for ‘making ends meet’, on average the score for planning ahead was just 2.3/10.
