Déjà Vu
There is an old Chinese curse which runs ‘may
you live in interesting times.’ Well the times we live in are certainly
interesting but whether you feel blessed or cursed will largely depend on your
viewpoint.
Less than five months ago we were writing
about the stock market and currency volatility which followed on from the
Brexit vote and now we are seeing similar fluctuations after America’s decision
to appoint Donald Trump as its next president and commander-in-chief. In
America particularly initial falls in the market were quickly reversed, leading
to the highest weekly gains seen since 2011.
Whether this bounce will continue or
whether there will be some element of correction only time will tell. However,
in this time of uncertainty we thought it appropriate to reiterate our comments
following Brexit to the effect that “this is a time of change and opportunity
but it is not a time for panic.” The best advice continues to be to invest with
current circumstances and future anticipated needs in mind, to spread the
portfolio across business sectors and sectors of the world, and to review
investments on a regular basis to ensure that they remain on track should
circumstances change.
