Don't Get Stung
If you are planning to make the most of the Devon sunshine this year, take a little extra care when you hit our fantastic beaches. On top of the usual warnings about being sun aware and checking up on water safety and currents comes another warning from the Marine Conservation Society.
According to the Society increasing numbers of Portuguese man o’war jellyfish have been sighted along Britain’s shores. Keep it in perspective - there were only thirty sightings in Devon and Cornwall last year but, driven by warmer waters, numbers are expected to increase this year.
The sting of the Portuguese man o’war jellyfish can be extremely painful or even life-threatening in some circumstances. However, like so many things in life, being aware of the risks makes it far easier to avoid the danger. So looking out for jellyfish with blue or purple tentacles can help you to avoid being stung, in the same way that being aware of some of the most common approaches carried out by financial fraudsters can help you to protect your savings. Our top three tips for avoiding getting stung this summer are therefore:
- Walk carefully on the beach
- Remember your bank or financial provider will never phone asking you to disclose information or your PIN number and
- If an offer looks too good to be true it probably is!
