Building a Legacy

After all the warnings about stadiums being unfinished,
athletes’ accommodation not passing stress tests and infrastructure projects
being behind schedule, the 2016 Brazil Olympic Games opened with a flourish.
Overnight it seemed as though the negativity vanished, to be replaced with worldwide
excitement of seeing so many competitors striving to be the best in their
chosen sport.

Awarded the games at a time when Brazil was very much one of
the up-and-coming economies in the world (part of the Brazil, Russia, India and
China investment grouping); in common with many economies the country has since
had to contend with the effects of worldwide recession. That it has done so and
still managed to build the infrastructure required for the Olympic Games is to
its credit; that there were setbacks along the way is hardly surprising. What
is important for Brazil now is that it builds on the momentum generated by the
Olympics in order to create a lasting legacy for its people.

Does the successful delivery of the Olympics mean that
investors should look on the Brazilian economy in a particularly favourable
light? Not necessarily. Investment decisions should be made based on personal
circumstances and with a long-term viewpoint. Best advice also recommends
investments are spread to ensure that no one country or sector can adversely
affect a disproportionate amount of the investment portfolio.
