Assessing form – a lesson from the Euros
If you’re a football fan, at the time of writing you have already become immersed in the stories of triumph and disaster that characterise the European football tournament. Even those who aren’t fans may not be able to completely ignore the tournament as TV schedules give way in the face of football matches and team news occupies the front and back pages of the papers.
No doubt as the tournament progresses there will be stories of ‘in form’ teams failing to gel and teamwork triumphing over superior individual skills. As with any other sporting tournament allegiances will switch as teams fade out of the contest and constant appraisals of form and fitness will keep the competition alive for those who intend to see it through to its conclusion. More importantly, as with any team tournament those tasked with managing and leading the teams will constantly be reviewing their selection, ensuring that their players are fit for purpose and will deliver the best returns at any given stage of the competition.
What’s this got to do investment advice? Well it’s said that business can learn a lot from sport and vice versa and this particular event is no different. The majority of people may not expect to reappraise their investments on a daily (or even minute by minute if on social media) basis but nor is it appropriate to make an initial selection and stick with it through to the bitter end. Just as managers will revise and reselect their teams based on current and future anticipated performance, so too should investors review their portfolios to ensure that they still meet current and future expectations.
