Making a Decision? Sleep on it!
Research from the University of Exeter has cast new light on the beneficial effects of sleep. It’s long been known that whilst we sleep our brains sort through and process our experiences but the extent to which they do so is still being explored. Now Exeter researchers have discovered that sleep not only prevents memories from being forgotten, it also makes them easier to access. This means that after sleep we are more able to recall facts which we previously struggled to retrieve.
Commenting on the research Dr Nicolas Dumay said “while asleep, we actively rehearse information flagged as important.” Whilst further research is required in this area, it does tend to support the theory that when we have significant decisions to make, such as investments or pension provision, we should sleep on them rather than rushing to commit. That gives our brains time to process the information and to come up with a more reasoned decision.
